Historical Event on 1/26/1950

India became a Republic within the British Commonwealth and the Indian Air Force dropped its ""Royal"" prefix. At this time, it possessed six fighter squadrons of Spitfires, Vampires and Tempests, operating from Kanpur, Poona, Ambala and Palam, one B-24 bomber squadron, one C-47 Dakota transport squadron, one AOP flight, a communications squadron at Palam and a growing training organisation.

10/4/1997Indian National Satellite (INSAT-2D), fourth satellite in INSAT-2 series, became inoperable due to power bus anomaly. This satellite had capabilities such as mobile satellite service, business communication and television outreach beyond Indian boundaries.

7/16/1996The four basin states of Narmada valley - Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra - reach agreement to raise the height of Sardar Sarovar dam in Gujarat to 436' after which hydrological studies will be done for 5 years to decide whether the height should be raised to the awarded 455'.
