Release number: 12-01
Date: February 9, 2012
By: Cynthia Konecny, Crime Analyst

Summary of Incidents:

Since November 2011, a pattern of burglaries has occurred in the Redmond Ridge area
to residents of India origin. At least one criminal group, arrested for burglarizing
homes in Sammamish and other areas in 2011, is no longer in jail. The burglary crew
quickly sold thousands of dollars worth of family heirloom jewelry to unscrupulous gold
dealers before detectives apprehended them and recovered the remaining jewelry.
They may be active again in the area.

Personal Safety and Crime Prevention:
Burglars casing homes will often ring doorbells or knock several times to determine
whether or not the home is occupied, before looking for an access point to the target.
When the resident answers the door, they will offer a service for sale (tree trimming,
house painting, etc), or ask for someone unknown to you - report this suspicious
activity.

Know the indicators criminals may be looking for and take steps to make your home a
less attractive target.

Avoid leaving shoes outside the door.
Minimize or Eliminate porch decorations of India origin like Rangoli, Lord Ganesh, paintings etc.

How you can help:

Consider installing digital video cameras to record persons and vehicles on your
property and in your neighborhood.

Get to know what people and vehicles are typically in your neighborhood. When you
see suspicious persons, vehicles or activity, notify the King County Sheriff's Office
immediately. The more details you can provide the better.

If it is possible to do without endangering yourself or others, take a digital
photo of the suspicious person or vehicle, capturing any distinctive features
and the license plate.

Send an email to redmond.ridge@kingcounty.gov, attaching any photos.

Let a neighbor know when you will be away from your home, so that others.

can watch for any suspicious activity near it.
