4/16/1997G. Kishenchand, former Indian Test cricketer, died.
3/29/1992The expert committee recomends an autonomous council for the Jharkhand region of Bihar.
9/6/1975Dularelal Bhargav, veteran writer, passed away. He was associated with 'Chand' and 'Madhuri' magazines.
10/22/1929Air Mail Series Stamps were issued. These stamps were of denominations of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 12 annas.
1/8/1968The Official Languages Act, 1963 was amended. Accordingly, a provision was made in Section 3 (4) of the Act of the effect that employees of the Union Government proficient either in Hindi or in English may carry out their work effectively and that their interests may no be adversely affected merely because they are not proficient in both the languages. According to Section 3 (5), it is necessary for bringing to an end the use of English language for the Official purposes of the union that resolutions to this effect are passed by the legislatures of the states (i.e. states where Hindi is not the Official Language) and after considring these resolutions, a resolution is passed by both the houses of the Parliament to put an end to the use of English language.
2/10/1926Rajmata Krishna Kumari, social worker, was born at Dharangadhra.
4/6/1930Mahatma Gandhi picked up a lump of natural salt for breaking the 'Salt Law'. He was arrested at Dandi. This movement gathered strength and within a month about one lakh people were sent to jail. This violation of Salt Law was the second great step in India's Freedom Movement.
6/4/1947Dharmanand Damodar Kosambi, internationally famous Pandit of Buddhism, passed away.
