A dream of setting up a Sugarcane Shop with match-cuts with a glass of green sugarcane juice spilling on the table to a floor being cleaned by water which collects dirt making a similar color dashes a 15-year old Baalu early morning. Baalu's dreams are shattered when he makes an investment which turns out to be a fraudulent company. Baalu takes the route of conning people by offering people a lottery scheme since he lost faith in people, but ends up conning a mentally-challenged man. Baalu has to choose between his dream and humanity!
I never really expected the events of the film unfolding in delightful and humanistic manner. The script written by Saurabh Bhave and Sandeep Modi is one of the finest Marathi story I witness on screen. Fully justified by impeccable Direction by Sandeep Modi along with visually stunning and captivating Cinematography by Rangarajan Ramabadran- "Chumbak" is a heartwarming story. Never did the makers went overboard in terms of handling the mentally-challenged man and the stupid world around him- "dimwit" as people call him, the world is so. Induced by humor, satire with a heavy heart of humanity, this Marathi film wins my lottery of 'the best film'.
It will a shorter and less detailed review since the experience and the smile I was having throughout the film rewarded my inner-self. Probably, the film starts where Amole Gupte's "Stanley Ka Dabba" ended and goes beyond that. The characters are close to reality and played brilliantly by the actors. Sahil Jadhav who plays Baalu does an excellent job, the innocence striking on his face yet the 'want' is gently performed. The actor who stunned me was Lyricist Swanand Kirkire playing mentally-challenged man- phenomenal performance.
"Chumbak" is a journey of a heartwarming human story which I would definitely recommend.
